Dialed at Perris
December, 2006
So I wasn't full of shit about Perris. I nailed it today. I was dialed in on my 5.4 from about 10:30 to 12:30. For the last 45 minutes or so I felt I could have been on smaller and I had the 5.4 rigged for handling - and I weigh 200 now and was on my JP 91. So basically I'm saying it was windy....damn windy. Cold water but sunny and warm and 2 other sailors out.
The winds were surprisingly steady (no evil gusts). More like tradewinds in that they cycle up and down a bit so you're comfortable for a while, then wound out of your mind for a while.
Like I said the indicator is March a.f.b. which was reading about 18G24 this morning - but that is a few miles downwind and the winds fade quickly as you get further from the mtns. I'd say it was probably more like 24 gusting low 30s. Pretty trippy, a few miles away in the town of Perris, it's dead calm; then you see some flags as you're driving up to the lake road and when you clear the dam it's whitecaps, rolling swells, trees bent over...really cool.
Another indicator could be Beaumont (according to locals), where a good East wind around 20 means its ripping on the lake. Yesterday it was blowing dust and the guys said they were riding 3 foot swells on the west end of the lake (230lb guy on a 5.2 and he was way overpowered). Fully believe that as I look at the March readings from Sunday (you can see up to 7 days online).
Great day.....had to share.
