Dawn Patrol in Texas
January 2008
by Manny
We (Kara and I) have been going to Corpus every other month during this winter to get away from the zoo of daily life. This past January, we drove up on a Friday night and checked in to the hotel. The weather was promising for Saturday....15 to 20 and gusting to 30 in the afternoon.
The next morning......pure glass the whole day (of course!) with a high temp of 75.....talk about torture. Saturday night we went to Applebees and then went to see the Bucket List. That night we look at the forecast and a Northern front is suppose to hit Corpus in the early morning hours.
Sunday morning at 5:01 AM Kara opens the door of the hotel and sees that it’s blowing 20 plus WHOOOOOWHHOOOO.....
but it’s 55 degrees outside. Load up the truck and check out of the hotel.
We arrive at Bird Island at Padre Island National Seashore and start rigging immediately (wind is at a steady 15 to 20). By the time we have completed the rigging process it’s 6:30 AM; I rigged a 9.0 (don't ask why, but I anticipated that the wind was going to die by mid morning) and Kara rigs a 6.6. I send her out on the Mistral Equipe 2 (12'6" and 260 liters for anybody who doesn’t know what that board is) and VOILA she is in the footstraps for the first time and screaming with both joy and fear. I join her with my Roberts and the 9.0 way overpowered. At around 9:00 AM she came in for a permanent break. I decided to take the 6.6 out with the Roberts and I had blast for another hour. By that time other windsurfers start to arrive and were deciding what to rig. The wind was tapering off pretty quickly at that point to 15 and below. I decided to come in and call it a day.
That turned out to be a great weekend. Dawn patrols are back in effect now! :)
See you all later -
