"Opening Day" at Isabella 2008
April 6th

by Spennie

Debi's stuck at home creating a website for the Cabrillo Beach Enduro windsurf race (coming this July 19 & 20th!), so Larry & I head up to the lake in the van Saturday Morning to catch some of the great wind I predicted. Hey, I was right for once! Too bad nobody listened, the beach was deserted the whole time.

We get up there about 10:00 AM, and it's already blowing enough to sail, but we need to do a couple things to the trailer first, and don't start rigging until around 11:00. I start by rigging a 6.5 Retro for me and a 5.6 Hucker for Larry. By the time I do that it's blowing harder, around 24 or so, so I rig a 5.2 Revo in anticipation of higher winds.

Sure enough, by the time I get that rigged and pull on the full suit & booties it's time to try out my new 5.6 Hucker, so I go out and fly around for a few runs on it, but by now it's ramped up to 26-ish, and I'm way overpowered, so I grab the 5.2 and go out. In case you don't know, I'm 6'4" tall and around 205 lbs., and I'm fully wound up on the 5.2, WooHoo! It's not really that cold, either, about 64 on my thermometer, although the water is kinda brisk.

I probably should rig down again, but enough with the rigging, I'll just hold on to this 5.2 and hope it doesn't get any higher. I sail down to the Ghetto for a while for some bump 'n jump, then back up to the Aux Dam to switch boards and try some speed sailing. Alas, the wind is finally backing off a little, and besides I don't have my fast board, so I'm only able to go 35.7 mph, oh well.

Larry & I de-rig (he had rigged a 4.6 in my absence for a total of 4 sails) and go to Paradise Cove for dinner, then come back and sleep like dead men until Sunday morning, when we wake up to 20 mph wind! Normally this would have me busting down the door to get out there, but I expected it to ramp up again, so we go to breakfast at Nelda's, then come back and chill out with a Sunday paper for a while before rigging. Today it's a 6.0 for me and the 5.2 for Larry, but still a total blast, and we sail until about 2:30, then de-rig & head home.

Isabella's great this time of year, un-crowded, no damn jet-skis, no boats, no drunken asses WooHoo-ing at 2:00 AM. Sure it's a full suit & booties, but we were never really cold, and the wind is positively outstanding and should not be missed! See you next time.............?
